My work is intersted in investigating boyhood and the acts of play between adolescents. I am fascinated by the ways that the toys and games we play can ilicit more sinister narratives, focusing on the way that play is often violent and brutal. Children fight, wrestlye, pull, and attack one another all the time, and this is simply a normality of childhood.

This current body of work can be thought of as two categories: the tools of violence and the actors of violence. The first, tools of violence, can be seen in the smaller works, for example Heat and Gum-man, both use the motif of a gun to allude to the violent nature of these works. The brutality of these weapons are ultimately subdued as the pink color shared between both of these works points to the ‘plasticality’ the playfulness and imaginative quality of these objects; despite bearing the likeness of a weapon of murder they are just capguns and pellet guns, toys; still though why are these the toys that young men seem so drawn towards?

The actors of violence are the participants in many of my paintings. In Brothers Playing, the emotions of the victim are a combination of tender and anguished, their eye penetrated by a ghastly hand. Other moments like in Peek-a-Boo, my actor is a child meeting the viewers gaze to create a sort of tension in the moment, like the instant before you are found in hide-and-seek.
